Finland - some info

Reader comment on: PIGS Without Jews

Submitted by Ned (United States), Feb 11, 2010 10:31

Finland doesn't have many Jews for historic reasons not of its own making. It was controlled by Sweden for 700 years and the Swedish monarchy did not permit Jews to settle there. After Swedish rule, Finland was dominated by Russia. Jews who were forced into mandatory conscription into the Russian army chose to settle in Finland since it was far from the Czar and did not have a history of antisemitism. Today, Finland treats its small Jewish population very well. My guess is they will be spared.
