Reader comment on: The New York Times on the Tea Party Movement

Submitted by Lyle (United States), Feb 16, 2010 08:58

This part of the tea party reminds me of the American party of the early 1850s (Know Nothings), they railed against catholics and immigrants to hide the slavery issue at the time. These sort of movements exist every time there is stress in America, ranging from a feeling that the America I am living in is not the one I grew up in, on up. A large part of the movement is an anti-elitism that feels the elite does not give a hoot about what they think. All the movement needs is a William Jennings Bryan type to lead it. (or put another way a saner Ross Perot)
