Now not all of this is preserved, but more and more is if you look at the newer national monuments which are run by the BLM not the park service. (Grand Caynon Parashant in Northern Az for example). A lot of the BLM land is what was left over after the public selected lands thru 1900 as well as the National Parks/Forests/Wildlife Refuges.
