Hourly versus Salaried

Reader comment on: Apple FoxConn Labor Standards

Submitted by Lyle (United States), Mar 30, 2012 22:35

Given the comments of the Foxconn workers they are paid by the hour. The folks you cite in the US are paid a salary and told what to do so the time it takes is their concern. It is the case that the hours put in by most exempt folks in the US exceed 40 per week but with no overtime. These hours increased over the last 30 years, when I started work at a major oil company research lab in 1976 it was an 8 to 4:30 situation with everyone leaving in 1 min at 4:30. Of course today that is not the case. In particular if you include the electronic tethers most white collar folks have to work, 60 is typical of what hours an exempt person works.

Note that Foxconn claims it will make the workers whole, but we see a concern about their veracity.

It appears that there is a national law in china that says the max work week is 49 hours. [52 words]LyleMar 31, 2012 01:12
