My head spinsReader comment on: Photo of the Day Submitted by ben (United States), Aug 21, 2012 22:52 You are fiercely against Bloomberg and his nanny state telling people what they can buy, but also don't like when the government allows people to choose how they use their benefits? How is this not a contradiction? Would you be in favor of telling people on food stamps they can't buy large sodas? Should the government money come with strings attached in your mind? The Future of Capitalism replies: I answered the food stamp/soda question here http://www.futureofcapitalism.com/2010/10/no-food-stamps-for-soda if the government is going to give out money I have no problem with it coming with conditions as long as it's not an unconstitutional condition that's just a regulatory compulsion disguised as a condition. I think there's a difference between telling people what they can or can't buy with their own money and with money that they are getting from the government to feed their families with. I'm not even necessarily against allowing pizza places to take food stamps, but if a state or a city government or even the federal government wanted to say you could only use the food stamps for pizza and not for soda or for delivery charges, and not for the caviar-topped pizza, I'd be fine with that.
