Albany is surely no beacon of purity, but of the hundreds of millions of dollars raised, what amount would be spent on "special interests." Even if one concedes that the special interests have no value themselves, a small proportion of the money would go towards that. The states revenue goes primarily towards healthcare and education. I would think that taxing soda would an excellent tradeoff to save a teacher's job, start a new charter school, keep a hospital's door open and keep the cuts in medicaid from affecting too many people. There is no question that Albany is a mess, but we should not sacrifice our future and our health out of spite for the politicians.

The Future of Capitalism replies:

The two biggest lobbying/interest/campaign donating groups in Albany are the teachers union and the combination of the health care workers union and the hospital association. Health care and education are the special interests. New York spends more on both than nearly anywhere else, but our people aren't healthier and our students aren't better educated or smarter as a result.
