The Texas Dept of Crimal Justice (prisons) has moved to the same model, the physicians are at the Galveston Med School and see inmates around the state by teleconference, it is said to save significant money. Now of course the model makes a lot of sense for places like Junction, Tx pop 4000 (for the county) where no obstetrician resides for example. I wonder if this model might first catch on in small towns that are now seeking a sole physician for the community. (I understand some places with pops of 40 or 50 have had this for a number of years) The community would have a number of emts and a good helicopter landing space to take emergency cases to the nearest big city. Note for reference that west of San Antonio by a couple of counties you have population densities that make the counties still part of the frontier.
