Reader comment on: The Catholic School Crash

Submitted by Lyle (United States), Mar 14, 2013 17:05

The catholic community is more integrated with society than 1 or 2 generations ago. Back then children were sent to catholic schools to protect them from the real world of public schools. Catholics back then still had lots of remants of being a persucuted minority in the US (after all the 1920s KKK was as much against catholics as blacks). It was felt that if a child went to a publc school they would get indoctrinated in the protestant point of view. (Before the 1960s decisions on prayer etc in public schools). So the mainstreaming of the catholic religion has reduced the desire to emphasize the different that held a generation ago.
