"corporate interests pushed to abandon safegards preventing finandial sector from making risky bets which had to be backstopped by American taxpayers when thsoe bets went sour?

Is this little man so confused or is he so wedded to the party line he can't see the forest for the trees? Why would the financial sector make "risky bets" unless the government said it would back them.

Mr Reich can't make up his mind about who is the government and who are the taxpayers. He tends to use what ever definition fits what he wants at the moment.

I wonder if he has followed people who have moved through the income quintiles? His picture might be a bit different.

Lastly, what does he think the folks who make the money do with it? Does he think the government (or maybe the taxpayer) knows better what to do with money. The person who earned it will make more and in so doing will probably need folks to help him do it which means he will have to pay them. Hmmmm, is that how a market economy works?
