Exactly Why the Globe is Needed

Reader comment on: Globe Editor Brags About Dead Paying Subscribers

Dear Sir:

I was present at Mr. McGrory's talk, and it was obvious to everyone (except for you, apparently), that the remark about billing people after death was a joke. Didn't you hear the laughter? Didn't you hear the curl in Mr. McGrory's tone, indicating a punchline? You wrote: "It wasn't clear whether he was exaggerating for humorous effect or whether he was serious." And you apparently called the Attorney General's office to ask whether Mr. McGrory had just admitted to a crime.

I can't think of a better example of why the Globe is essential. Great journalists like Mr. McGrory witness a complex world and put it into context. You, sir, suffer from a tin ear, a biased viewpoint, or both. Or perhaps the problem is mine, and your entire post is a joke that I failed to get.

Respectfully,

Context
