Two weak arguments

Reader comment on: Magnet's Immigration Dichotomy

1. Perhaps reforming welfare would be preferable to maintaining our borders. However, it is actually possible to prevent an amnesty that will IMHO lead to millions more illegal immigrants. It is not currently feasible to reform welfare so as to eliminate coverage for illegal immigrants. In fact, I'm not sure the courts would even allow illegal immigrants to be excluded from welfare.

2. It may be the case that Republican opposition to amnesty encourages Hispanics to vote Democratic. However, IMHO no matter what the Republicans do, a big majority of immigrants will vote democratic. They will elect people who will enact bad laws. We are seeing this right now in California.
