It's always easier to stand "above the fray," Ira, but the problem with that approach is that the policies you favor don't stand a chance. I'm an independent also, but I don't go around bragging about not being a Republican, nor do I blame Fox for posing questions that Americans seem to be very interested--vide: the reaction to Trump's statement when he announced. Apparently illegal immigration is a concern for a lot of Americans, especially those living in the border states. In terms of letting in more people, why don't we just open the doors and let anyone in?
