Then there are no natural barriers to growth within 500 miles (The Rockies being the nearest barrier). the issue with NYC is that beyond man made barriers mother nature has limited its growth primarily with the Hudson River which is expensive to build crossings on. (Compared to the Missouri or MIssissippi above Cairo, Il) The same issue of Water barriers applies to the Bay Area, plus mountains as well, and mountains to LA (where landslides fires and floods make the mountains not good places to build).

So the man made limits just make the natural limits worse.
