One of the key things that flipped me from being a libertarian liberal into a libertarian conservative was, in the late '70s, when Jack Kemp (of blessed memory) et al were starting to seriously push a flat tax. Opposition came from United Way, and the other Big Charities. My first lesson on how the world really works.
