A useful column describing some of the dynamics after the election.

But my view is that the GOP is fatally damaged unless it cuts loose the Rump wing. Not saying it can do that, but I'm saying it should. The party intellectuals and leaders should disavow the anti-immigrant, anti-trade views that are economically illiterate, and move the party towards a more freedom-oriented approach. While this means that the Party will lose a bunch of disaffected negative nellies, it would probably gain a lot of independents with which to form a viable major second party. But if they try to make nice with the Trumpettes, there will only be more grief until the party goes the way of the Whigs of 1860.
