Imagine a bill granting every American a free federally delivered ice cream every Sunday morning. Provision 2: steak on Monday, also home delivered. Provision 3: a dozen red roses every Tuesday. You get the idea. Would each individual provision be popular in the polls? Of course.
Mr. Krauthammer is writing about the Democrats and ObamaCare, but he might just have easily turned his pen against transportation spending in administrations both Republican and Democrat. As the Cato Institute's @Liberty blog recently pointed out, President Obama's transportation secretary, Ray LaHood, a Republican former congressman, recently told a reporter that "it's fun playing Santa Claus." Mr. LaHood, by the way, also reportedly wants a federal ban on texting while driving. At least 22 states that already ban texting while driving also reportedly offer traffic updates via Twitter.
