Not all states are the same in teacher pay

I certainly appreciate that there are states where teachers are not paid well - but in NYS that is not the case. The average teacher salary in my local SD was about $115,000 a few years ago, with lifetime healthcare and a great defined benefit pension (not subject to NYSIT) and all for working 180 days/ year. There has to be some balance in this discussion, not all states are the same. The Empire Center for Public Policy FOILs and posts salary and pensione data on https://www.seethroughny.net/ - NYS is in a league of its own & the local property taxes that are required to support the NYSUT machine is driving people out of NY.
A solid step forward would be to introduce merit pay for great teachers - but NYSUT will not let that happen in NY.
