Teachers, firefighters and police provide more value

Reader comment on: Taxing the 'Rich'

As a society, I would hope we would value the education of our children more highly than getting a good mixed drink at the local watering hole. Education creates the foundation for a more prosperous future, is there anyplace better to spend a nation's treasure than education?

The Future of Capitalism replies:

My point was that it's not the "nation's" treasure it's treasure that belongs to individuals, and left to their own devices some of those individuals would prefer to spend it on wedding or bar mitzvah bartenders or musicians rather than pay it to the government so the government can spend it on teachers. "Society" can vote to force the individuals to pay the money in taxes so that the money goes to the teachers rather than the bartenders and musicians, but what the Times column highlights is that it's a forced wealth transfer.
