The pipeline is not as black and white as Newt would like to paint it. See http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/01/18/six-reasons-keystone-xl-was-bad-deal-all-along/ for some of the reasons. It's not meant to supply America, and may even have the effect of increasing gas prices in the heartland. Maybe after the disaster of BP, rushing a decision to please the oil companies isn't necessarily in the national interest. The opposition doesn't just reside in San Francisco, and Newt alienates another segment of the population every time he opens his mouth.
