Dividends Represent Hard-Earned Income
Reader comment on: Southern Asks Shareholders To Fight Dividend Tax Increase
Submitted by Jean Ager (United States), Nov 14, 2012 15:19
I am a small, independent investor who has built up a portfolio of dividend-paying stocks to support my retirement. I consider my income twice-earned as I have saved for many years to build up my investments, and do daily research to keep up with my investments. I am distressed by the often-stated assumption that dividends are "unearned income."
The financial uncertainty of the past four years has made it difficult to plan. I have restrained my spending and have put major purchases on hold . For the first time in my life, I have felt that my future independence is threatened and may be affected by the vagaries of political decisions.
It worries me that politicians treat investment income as if it were a sort of "found money" rather than income earned by taking risk and practicing frugality.
