When you get every house in a large area having a fireplace fire its more than smell, particulates arise and are visible as haze and ones eyes can begin to water, in particular if there is no wind. A good strong wind fixes the problem, If they had tried to locate in say Albuquerque, there would have been some days they might have had to bake their pizza in a gas oven due to smog regulations. (Let alone talk about Fresno, Bakersfield, or LA) . So the appeal of the smell of wood smoke is in the nose of the smeller.
