Why do we have to kill innocent animals when there is such an abundance of other food to eat?

If we were supposed to be eating ducks in nature, they would taste good to us without having to sear them, and douse them with tons of flavor. We are not lions who must eat dead animals for survival. We have a choice, so why kill animals?
