"Donald Trump is a drag in a general election in purple states."

I think it takes a lot deeper dive than this; You need to establish that the party machinery actually gave the Trump endorsees the same level of support they gave non-Trump candidates.

It's possible the "drag" wasn't due to Trump, but the party establishment just tending to abandon seats where the primaries hadn't gone to their own choices. It's not like that never happens; Trump himself was subject to some of that in 2016.
