Possible vs. Optimal

Reader comment on: Bill Clinton on Marriage

Why doesn't Obama or Clinton try and get DOMA repealled through congress?

Consider the following facts.

The Republican platform this past election included, again, support for a national constitutional amendment restricting marriage to one man/one woman.

The Republicans hold the House of Representatives.

To legislatively repeal DOMA the repeal would have to pass the House of Representatives.

There is real harm being done, today, to gay and lesbian families because of DOMA.

Conclusion: Obama and Clinton are persuing the only path that can possibly repeal DOMA article 3 this year.
