Is the failure to plug the leak currently Obama's fault

Reader comment on: Seize BP?

you write that "failure to plug the leak becomes Obama's fault even more inarguably than it is now." This suggests that the failure is currently in some way Obama's fault. What would you have had Obama do differently to plug the leak?

The Future of Capitalism replies:

I meant more in terms of the court of public opinion, as in, say, Bob Herbert's recent columns. I read somewhere, maybe it was his column, that Canada requires companies to drill relief well holes at the same time as the main hole, which seems reasonable even if it may add to the original expense. Of course, you could double the chances of an error, too. The fact that the head of the MMS resigned suggests some error on the administration's part. Why make her resign if she did nothing wrong? I think Obama himself has said he takes responsibility. But I agreed with what he said at the press conference that no one has a greater incentive to plug the hole than BP.
