Elections as our founders envisioned them were far different affairs than today. If the activist Supreme Court overrules acts of congress such as McCain-Feingold, the only way left to fix a broken electoral system is through a constitutional amendment. Things are going to get a lot worse before they get better.

Wars are different today, too. Does that mean Congress should rewrite Article I where it give Congress the power to declare war, and the Supreme Court should just give Congress a pass on it (otherwise it's being "activist"?). Money was spent on elections in the days of the Founders, too.
