We ascribe to our past leaders a lack of baseness that is not truthful.

Reader comment on: Thoughts on the Final Presidential Debate

Submitted by Scott Pierce (United States), Oct 23, 2012 06:30

George Washington won his first election to the House of Burgess by bribing the elector on their way to the polls with extravagant amounts of booze. In the Continental Congress when they were hunting about for a commander, it just so happened that he was the only one showing up day after day in full dress uniform. Certainly this doesn't disqualify him for greatness but we seem to place to much emphasis on the virtue of past leaders not accounting for their clay feet.
