I am an Adjunct Faculty member at a community collegeReader comment on: Who Are the Unemployed? Submitted by Kevin (United States), Aug 27, 2010 18:09 This column is filled with lies. I have been an adjunct faculty member at a community college for 14 years. I teach a huge load of classes when they need me and then the next semester may only have one or two classes. I work my tail off for my college, I am highly qualified and an excellent college professor with outstanding reviews. I have no benefits and have no job security and am completely at the mercy of the needs of the college. Full-time positions are few and the college relys upon overqualified professionals like me. I AM NOT ELIGIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT between semesters or in those semesters when I am forced to take a lighter teaching load because I am paid only for the hours I teach. So even though 15 semester hours is a full classload for full-time faculty it is only a 15 hour a week part-time job for adjunct faculty (although we are doing exactly the same amount of work as the full-time faculty.) So stop spreading your lies! Note: Comments are moderated by the editor and are subject to editing. Submit a comment on this article Other reader comments on this item
