Why has the cost doubled?

Reader comment on: Paul Krugman on the Angry Rich

"Why should the cost of "civilized society" have nearly doubled?"

Well, let's see here... the population in the United States increased from approximately 120 million in 1927 to 330 million today, that's nearly triple.

From 2003 to present we fought wars in two different far off countries and at the same time reduced our ability to pay for those wars.

Our national infrastructure, built during the Eisenhower administration, is crumbling and needs to be re-built, but in the era in which it was built the top tax rate was between 91% and 92%.

That's three reasons I can think of off the top of my head.
