You "don't see how checking email while driving is much worse than fiddling with the radio or the air conditioner or talking to the person in the passenger seat or reading the roadside billboards."? Did you write that with a straight face? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you have superhero abilities that allow you to type and read words on a tiny screen without being distracted, but for the rest of us mortals, that's just a ridiculous statement. I hope you live far, far away from me.
